Predicting the outcome of this season is equally as hard as it was last season, maybe even more so. Last season there were only four contenders through the season and it seems as if this season there is likely to be five.

The following is the top five’s current odds of winning according to SkyBet:

Chelsea 15/8
Manchester City 12/5
Manchester United 9/2
Arsenal 6/1
Liverpool 11/1

Now for me, I certainly think it is worth putting a bet on either Liverpool or Arsenal causing an upset this year as both teams have strengthened the depth of their squads.

Liverpool

The majority of people do think that without a certain someone (Luis Suarez), Liverpool may struggle to have the same impact this season as they did the last time around. Whilst it could be argued that they overachieved last season, you have to remember how well they did at the start of the season when Suarez was suspended. Yes he is a fantastic player, and they have not got anyone who will score and create as many goals as him BUT no single player is bigger than the whole club. I think Liverpool will do just fine without him. I don’t expect that they will win though.

Rodgers is intelligent enough to know what they need to do this season to throw themselves into the title race though and it’s certainly worth having a go on them to win the whole thing at 11/1.

Key Player: Steven Gerrard

Best Signing: Dejan Lovren from Southampton

Final Position Prediction: 4th

Manchester United

Van Gaal is a genius and I have no doubt about that. They have a huge problem and that is at the back. All three of their young centre backs (Phil Jones, Chris Smalling & Johnny Evans) have not progressed as much as they should have and I fear that if they opt to play five at the back then they may suffer due to their weak defensive options. Van Gaal is tactical enough to work around this and I expect them to sign a world class centre back before the transfer window is up. Ander Herrera looks like a promising signing but with Ryan Giggs retiring as well as Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra moving on I think it will be a tough season for the United defence. Rooney, Van Persie & Mata will need to stay fit if United want any chance of winning it.

With Van Gaal coming in it seems the bookies think that United have a strong chance with their odds at 9/2 but I for one cannot see it. I could be really wrong because they do not have Europe to worry about this season whilst they’re fellow contenders do.

Key Player: Wayne Rooney

Best Signing: Ander Herrera from Athletico Bilbao

Final Position Prediction: 5th

Arsenal

The main thing for Arsenal this season is keeping their talented midfield fit. Despite the depth that they have in that area they still seem to struggle every season due to injuries. Walcott, Chamberlain, Wilshere, Ozil, Ramsey and Flamini all had long injuries last season and Wenger will be hoping that he can keep his squad fit so that they can launch an attack at the title this season. Keeping the strong partnership of Mertesacker and Koscielny will also be key to Arsenal’s season. Sanchez looks like an exciting signing as well, but can Wenger learn from last season when he chose to continue to play the Arsenal way against the other top sides who knew how to deal with it or will he remain as stubborn as ever?

What worries me is the fact they are yet to sign a world class out and out striker. Campbell, Giroud and Sanogo are all good strikers but they will not score the number of goals that a championship winning side need. Despite this, they looked very good against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Key Player: Aaron Ramsey

Best Signing: Alexis Sanchez

Final Position Prediction: 3rd

Manchester City

Manchester City probably needed the least work to their team after last season and due to financial fair play they had very little choice when it came to signings anyway. Despite their poor showing in the Community Shield against Arsenal I expect them to do very well this season. Pellegrini clearly knew what he was doing when he brought DiMichellis in last year and he looks like a completely different player. He and Kompany seem to have sured up that back four and if the captain can stay fit then they may even win the title again. Yaya Toure will be pivotal to their season as well. It didn’t look like he wanted to be there during the 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield. He can be different class though, their season really does depend on how he plays.

It will be interesting to see how signings Fernando, Lampard, Caballero, Sagna, Zuculini and Mangala get on as well. City will do well, but I don’t think they will win it.

Key Player: Vincent Kompany

Best Signing: Fernando

Final Position Prediction: 2nd

Chelsea

Is Diego Costa the solution to Chelsea’s striker problems? Or is he another striker that will crumble once he puts on the blue shirt? His goals could be key to Chelsea’s season and the return of Didier Drogba could also play a large role.

Mourinho will be desperate to bring the league back to Stamford Bridge and do not be surprised if the Portuguese man begins to play mind games with his fellow managers right from the off in a bid to win the league. Cahill continues to improve every season and his partnership with John Terry is certainly a winner. Eden Hazard will play a strong part in Chelsea’s season and if he performs as well as he did last season then I see no reason why the blues cannot go all the way.

Key Player: Eden Hazard

Best Signing: Diego Costa

Final Position Prediction: 1st

Remember these are merely my predictions and opinions. What do you think will happen this season? Who do you think will go all the way?
